This video of a guy playing Pachelbel’s Canon on his electric guitar starts sedately enough, but after a minute you’ll have one foot propped up on your PC base unit and a window open so that the breeze blows through the cascading ringlets of your bubble-perm wig.
For some reason the guitarist keeps his face hidden throughout. My guess is it’s because he is in fact Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood and his alternative credentials would be permanently destroyed if the truth about what he gets up to in the privacy of his bedroom ever got out.
Did no one tell him that forced-harmonic hair metal went out around the time he learned to walk?
He’s really got it down, though. All he’s missing is a twang-bar dive bomb on the low E.
Jesus, what a hideous waste of a young life.
Nice modulation around the 4 minute mark though..Err I mean..thats terrible..musical mastubation…*edges quietly from comment box*
Part of what appeals to me is its utter, Anastacian shamelessness. Every time I watch it makes me laugh, both at and with the perpetrator. It’s like a boy building a cathedral out of matchsticks, a sonic cathedral if you will. His great but derivative technical accomplishment soars free from any restraint of taste or desire to communicate. It is Stars In Their Eyes; it is Andrew Lloyd-Webber; it is David Hasselhoff, running out of the sea in slow-motion to the sound of tills ringing from Jerusalem to Jakarta; it is… it is… time for me to get some sleep.
That was refreshing. Strangely, the most-maligned technique he deploys — the two-handed tapping — isn’t quite as cheesed-out as the rest of it.
I liked it – so what if it’s silly and tasteless? Great music which everyone knows, made even better with electric guitars – surely this is a Good Thing?
Truly mad, mad skillz on display there.
[…] Remember the “hair guitar” version of Pachelbel’s Canon? This New York Times article [PDF] tells the story behind it. […]
A bit ponderous for my liking; I prefer something with a bit more va-va-voom.
