Oh come on. There hasn’t been a French winner for ages. The last winner with a French name (going back through Armstrong, Riis, Ullrich, Indurain) was LeMond, and he’s a Yank. The French don’t hate Armstrong: he’s better at the lingo than most of the riders, his hotel in Paris hung out the Texan flag. They hardly want Ullrich to win.
Voeckler held the yellow jersey for longer than Lance will, and both have been nothing but generous to each other.
It’s true Le Monde digs for doping dirt, but so does the US sporting press on US athletes (though as most of them are black, and most reporters white, you could argue there is a racial motivation there too).
And to correct Anthony’s logic if not his sentiments: yes it is wrong of you to be pleased soley because you suspect it’s pissing the French off. Lance is a great man.
Racial motivation? Most US ports reporters are white? Are you kidding me? It’s amazing what stereotypes linger around, and how they twist with the times. If anything, they get off easier for drugs if they are non-white. Sports are the most integrated institutions in America, “over-integrated” if you look at the demographics. But who really cares? Wake up man, it’s not the 60’s anymore.
Well, that’s what I get for hedging my bets and trying to fnd a contrary explanation.
So my original point — the one that I’d didn’t quite have the courage to stick to — stands. US reporters are hard on US sportspeople over drugs. It’s not just the Frogs. And it’s not just motivated by nationalism.
No it isn’t. You should be pleased about this because Lance is a great man and it pisses the French off. (And don’t forget Le Monde as well.)
Quite the contrary, it’s the definition of virtue!!
